Create a Poll

Writing a headline and an open-ended question, and choosing who can see the poll.

A poll is one question and everything that comes back from it. From your organization page, choose Create Poll.

Headline

The short name people see first, on the answering screen and on the poll card in your organization. Keep it to a few words: "Budget Priorities 2027", "What should we do with the old library?"

The question

This is the prompt everyone answers. It should be open-ended β€” a question someone can talk about, not one they can finish in a word.

Good prompts sound like something you'd ask across a table:

  • "What's the one thing about getting around this neighborhood that needs to change?"

  • "Tell us about a time this service didn't work for you."

  • "What should we do first with the budget we have?"

Avoid yes-or-no questions and anything that lists the options for people. The whole point is to hear what you didn't think to put on a list.

You only write this one question. Follow-ups are generated from what each person actually says, so you don't have to write a branching script.

Visibility

Choose Public Poll or Private Poll:

  • Public. The poll can appear in the public polls directory alongside other open polls.

  • Private. Only reachable by the people you give the link to.

The visibility setting appears on paid plans. Organizations on the Free plan create public polls. See Plans and Billing to change that.

Create it

Choose Create Poll. You'll land on the poll's page β€” the dashboard where results appear. It's empty until the first response arrives.

From here, Share gets the poll in front of people, and Answer Poll lets you walk through it yourself. Answering your own poll once, before you send it out, is the fastest way to find out whether the question lands.
